Will shares back stories for two photographs in his grant-winning portfolio.

During the 15km Scratch Race qualifier at the Commonwealth Games, I aimed to recreate a panning shot from earlier in the year. From high up in the stands I got the image I came for and changed my settings increasing the shutter speed back up and shot just a couple more laps before capturing the above. I heard this crash before I saw it, picking out the sound of bikes coming together. Blocked by media scaffolding, my initial frames included the obstruction. Despite the limited reach of my 70-200 lens, I captured the moment as riders started to hit the boards, in an attempt to avoid fellow competitors I saw Matt Walls go up into and over the advertising board. I will always remember the complete silence around the velodrome immediately afterwards.

Captured at the European Championships in Munich, Germany, this photo features BMX freestyle finalist Kieran Reilly of Great Britain, who secured second place. After the podium ceremony, I had the opportunity to use the last light of sunset and the iconic Olympiaturm as a backdrop for a portrait with his medal. We had very limited time due to media interviews and were left with very little light, I improvised by asking a German TV crew to open the barn doors and to turn their light to illuminate Kieran’s face, resulting in the desired image.

The DPPF is thrilled to be able to further Will’s promising career.
