Meet our 2025 Grantees!

  • Camden Hall

    Camden Hall is a rising high school senior and works as a freelance photojournalist and photo editor based in Middle Tennessee. His current clients include ZUMA Press, Williamson Herald, The Tennessean, and UPI.

  • Ish

    Ishika is the sports photo intern at Getty Images. She graduated from Texas A&M in May, where she worked with A&M Athletics and The Battalion. She previously interned with the Houston Astros and the Houston Chronicle.

  • Chris Torres

    Chris is a staff visual journalist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was raised in Los Angeles and graduated from Cal State University Northridge where he was chief photographer and Editor in Chief of The Daily Sundial.

  • Joe Wakefield

    Joe is an action sports and events photographer living in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada. He is owner of JBW Photos, a company focused on telling the story of the MTB community in British Columbia and beyond.

  • Helen McGinnis

    Helen is a freelance photographer and tech professional based in Charlotte NC. She recently served as Photography Coordinator for Wake Forest Athletics and previously worked as a Photographic Services Intern with The Indianapolis Colts.

  • Lorenzo Vasquez

    Lorenzo is a self-taught photojournalist from Jacksonville FL who recently served as the OPS photographer for the Florida Gators University Athletic Association. He previously interned with USA Baseball and is a graduate of UofF

  • Thien-An Truong

    Thien-An is a San Jose State University student and a freelance photographer specializing in sports. His clients include the NCAA Photos, SF Chronicle, ISI Photos/Stanford Photo, San Jose State University, and the San Jose Mercury.

  • Isaac Wasserman

    Isaac is a freelance sports photographer and documentary photojournalist based in Minneapolis, MN. He was most recently an intern with Clarkson Creative / NCAA Photos and is a graduate of the University of Oregon.

2024 Grantees

  • Grace Bradley

    Grace is Staff Photographer for the MLS team FC Cincinnati and previously interned for Clarkson Creative/NCAA Photos. She is a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where she was a UK Athletics staff photographer.

  • Kent Edwards

    Kent is a self taught photographer from Bowie, Maryland. He is currently based in New York City and is  a photo intern at Thomson Reuters. Previously, he worked as a photography intern with the Portland Trail Blazers.

  • Matin Hashemi

    Born in Tabriz, Iran, Matin received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in multimedia from Tabriz Islamic Art University. He has freelanced for SOO Images (Iran), NVP Canada,  SDN Agency (USA) and other media outlets.

  • Aleksandra Janiak

    Originally from Poland and now living in the French Alps, Aleksandra works as a freelance photographer and filmmaker. She specializes in mountain sports and has a deep affection for reportage.

  • Angelina Katsanis

    Angelina is an East coast-based photographer and former visuals fellow at the Star Tribune. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, she led the annual Sports Photojournalism Workshop there and was photo editor at the Daily Tar Heel.

  • Máté Ladjánszki

    Máté works for the Népszava newspaper. He studied photography at Budapest Metropolitan University. In 2023 he participated in the AIPS Young Reporter Program at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin

  • Grace Smith

    Grace is a staff photojournalist at The Indianapolis Star. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 2024, where she worked at the Daily Iowan. She previously held an internship at The Denver Post.

  • Gunnar Ward

    Gunnar is the photo coordinator for the Texas Rangers and previously interned with the Cincinnati Reds and the Bowling Green Hot Rods. He received his B.A. in Photojournalism from Western Kentucky University.

2023 Grantees

  • Michael Chisholm

    Michael is a Toronto-based photographer. When he won a 2023 DPPF grant, he worked for the Canadian Premier League, Major League Baseball, and the National Hockey League. He graduated from Seneca College in 2020.

  • Luke Hales

    In 2023, Luke was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communication & media at the University of Michigan and working at Michigan Photography. Previously, he worked as the summer photography intern for the NFL in Los Angeles.

  • Sara Kempner

    In 2023, Sara was a freelance photographer based on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Initially a self-taught landscape photographer, Sara now spent most of her time photographing sports, with a heavy focus on mountain biking.

  • Tyler McFarland

    In 2023, Tyler was working as a photographer for Boise State Athletics. He graduated in 2024. He has experience in both commercial editorial photography and photojournalism. Tyler also received a DPPF mentorship.

  • Gabriel Monnet

    Gabriel is a Swiss photographer who graduated from the Centre d’enseignement professionnel de Vevey in 2021. In 2023 he was working as a freelance photographer and covers sports for various newspapers, magazines, and agencies, and for private clients.

  • Julia Nikhinson

    When she won a 2023 grant, Julia was a Maryland-based freelance photojournalist, frequently shooting for Reuters, The Washington Post and others. After graduating from the University of Maryland, she interned with AP, where she covered collegiate and professional sporting events.

  • Will Palmer

    In 2023, Will was a UK-based freelance photographer and University of York graduate working across multiple sports, specializing in football, cycling and field hockey with assignments both in the UK and abroad. He also received a DPPF mentorship.

2022 Grantees

  • Misper Apawu

    When Misper was awarded a 2022 grant, she was a freelance photographer based in Accra, Ghana. She graduated from the University of Cape Coast with a BSc in Marketing, and her work focuses on women and sports.

  • Jeff Dean

    In 2022, Jeff had just completed a fellowship as a Military Veterans in Journalism Fellow at NPR. He received  degrees in journalism  from the University of Oregon and interned with the Cincinnati Enquirer.

  • Ben Green

    As of 2022, Ben was based in Buffalo, working as a Team Photographer for the Buffalo Bills, Sabres, and Bandits as a part of Pegula Sports & Entertainment. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 2019.

  • Shae Hammond

    As of 2022, Shae was a San Jose, CA, based photographer recently hired at The Mercury News. After graduating from California State University, Northridge, she interned for CalMatters and the Santa Clarita Valley Signal.

  • Eakin Howard

    ​​In 2022, Eakin was a recent graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, Eakin is currently a freelance photographer in North Carolina. He has shot for Getty Images, the Los Angeles Times, NASCAR, and the World Curling Federation.

  • Julia Roger-Veyer

    When she was awarded a 2022 grant, Julia was a self-taught French photographer with a focus on ice and climbing, and she also worked as a nurse at the École Nationale de Ski et d’Alpinisme (ENSA) in Chamonix.

  • WeiChih Wang

    As of 2022, Wei-Chih was an underwater photographer based on Green Island on the east coast of Taiwan.  He is a former free-diving instructor, and he takes photos within the timespan of one breath.

2021 Grantees

  • Leigh Bacho

    When Lauren was awarded a DPPF grant, they were a Cleveland-based  sports photographer who majored in photojournalism at Ohio University. They had interned with the Indianapolis Colts and were working as a content creator for MLB.

  • Mike Dawson

    When Mike was awarded a DPPF grant, he was a freelance photographer based out of Lake Tahoe. Following his passions for photography and snowboarding, he was building a career in the snowboarding industry.

  • Abigail Dean

    When Abigail was awarded a DPPF grant, she had recently graduated from Ohio University with a photojournalism major and sports administration minor and had joined the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 as the photographic services intern.

  • Katelyn Mulcahy

    When Katelyn was awarded a DPPF grant and mentorship, she was a freelance sports photographer in Los Angeles, primarily working for Getty Images Sport covering the NBA, NHL, MLB, PGA, and more. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan Ann-Arbor.

  • Jaden Powell

    When Jaden was awarded a DPPF grant and mentorship, he was a Conway, Arkansas-based photographer studying at the University of Central Arkansas, where he was the first African American and youngest Head Athletics Photographer for their Athletics Department.

  • Tyler Schank

    When Tyler was awarded a DPPF grant and mentorship, she had recently earned her undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and became the assistant team photographer for the Tampa Bay Rays in fall 2021.

  • Anna Szilágyi

    When Anna was awarded a DPPF grant, she lived in Budapest, Hungary, where she worked as a freelance sports photographer and was studying for a Masters of Sport Management at the University of Physical Education.

  • Silas Walker

    When Silas was awarded a DPPF grant, he was a Portland OR photographer based in Lexington KY. He graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2020 with a BA in photojournalism and interned with the Lexington Herald-Leader. 

2020 Grantees

  • Chloe Knott

    In 2020, Chloe was a U.K.-based photographer for Danehouse Photography Ltd. She is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Glasgow School of Art.

  • Brandon Gallego

    In 2020 Brandon was a student athletics photographer for Louisiana State University where he covered a wide range of sporting events.

  • Abbie Parr

    In 2020, Abbie was a freelance sports photographer in Seattle WA who began her career as a photographer for the Colorado State University school newspaper and athletic department.

  • Katelyn Mulcahy

    When Katelyn was awarded a DPPF grant and mentorship, she was a freelance sports photographer in Los Angeles, primarily working for Getty Images Sport covering the NBA, NHL, MLB, PGA, and more. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan Ann-Arbor.

  • James Gilbert

    In 2020 James was a freelance photographer from Jacksonville, Florida who studied photography at Daytona State College.

  • Tim Nwachukwu

    As of 2020, Tim was a Washington, D.C.-based independent photographer who hailed from Louisville, Kentucky and was a product of the Missouri School of Journalism.

  • Andy Bao

    In 2020, Andy was a senior at UCLA majoring in art while working as a freelance photojournalist and photo editor. He interned as a photojournalist with The Seattle Times.

  • Sarah Stier

    As of 2020, Sarah was a New York-based freelance photographer who graduated from Ohio University with a degree in photojournalism.

  • Yong Teck Lim

    Yong is a photographer and editor born and raised in Singapore. As of 2020, he had majored in communications at SUNY Buffalo’s offshore campus and interned with Getty Sport in Los Angeles.
